Goodtel is a for-purpose telecom provider that donates 50%of all profits to Australian charities and community organisations.
Goodtel was founded in December 2019. A period of floods, bushfires, and the early days of a global pandemic. Amid all this uncertainty, co-founders Damien Gould and Daniel Crespi were moved to make a positive difference in the world.
Between them, Damien and Daniel had over 30 years of telecom experience, and believed that with the right business model, telecom could be a force for good.
The model they hit upon followed the disruptive approach of brands like Who Gives a Crap and Tom’s Shoes – combining commerce with charitable impact.
A new approach to telco
While telco might not seem like an obvious way to change the world, Damien and Daniel took this as a challenge to create a new type of service provider. And so, Goodtel was born.
Goodtel provides a full suite of telecom services, from nbn™ and 5G mobile, to business phone systems and Microsoft Teams calling. They offer a competitive range of plans and prices, supported by a mix of efficient digital customer service and real, helpful humans when you need a personal touch.
But if you think they’re a ‘traditional telco’ – you’d be mistaken.
In the Goodtel model, customers can select from a shortlist of charities when they sign up. Each quarter Goodtel will pass on 50% of profits to that chosen organisation. Over months and years, this adds up – and provides a reliable long-term income source for that selected charity.
From strength to strength
Five years into their mission, and Goodtel remains true to its founding vision. Moreover, the business is leading by example, striving to be Australia’s ethical telco.
Along the way they’ve reached some significant milestones, including certification as a B-Corp (Benefit Corporation), and achieving carbon neutral operations.
Another critical element is their single-minded focus on positive impact. They measure the success of their business more in terms of charitable and community outcomes – and less in terms of financial metrics. While profit and growth still matter, impact matters most.
To date, they have provided over $100,000 in direct donations to their charitable partners. In turn, funding important medical research, helping hundreds of sick and disadvantaged children, feeding hundreds of animals in shelters, and planting enough trees to remove over 150 tonnes of CO2.
Living their values
The Goodtel model has evolved over the years. Today, they focus on providing telecom services for small business, corporate and not for profit (NFP) customers. Furthermore, they live their values. They will not provide services to unethical industries – such as Gambling, Mining, or Tobacco.
Goodtel is fast becoming the provider of choice for many charities and non-profits. And they have seen growth in corporate clients who want to work with ethical and sustainable suppliers.
CEO and co-founder Damien Gould explains:
“Customers choose us because they want a telco that does a good job and does good in the community. Being carbon neutral, a certified B-Corp, donating over $100,000 to charities, and not serving harmful industries - this resonates with our market.”
Working with Telcoinabox
With no telecom or mobile network of its own, Goodtel relies upon wholesale suppliers (including Telcoinabox) to provide white label telecom services.
In this way, Goodtel can deliver reliable, competitively priced telecom services without the need to build from scratch.
They can stay focused on what they do best – helping protectthe planet and those in need – and operate with lower overheads. In turn, generating more profits and funding more important causes.
Goodtel and Telcoinabox have worked together since 2024. CEO Damien Gould reflects on this burgeoning relationship:
“Telcoinabox is a trusted name, they are aligned with our mission and support our social impact with competitive products and pricing.
Operating a for-purpose telco comes with many challenges. But Telcoinabox help to further our goals and have been an expert and responsive partner. We look forward to building along and successful partnership together.”
