Why More MSPs Are Moving Beyond 3CX

Across Australia, managed service providers are quietly reassessing the platforms they use to power their customers' communications. The shift is not sudden. It has been building for over a year, driven by a series of licensing changes, price increases, and strategic pivots from one of the market's most established names.
For many MSPs, 3CX has been a reliable foundation. But the platform's 2025 strategic direction has made it increasingly difficult for providers serving the Australian SMB market to remain profitable and competitive. The result is a growing shift toward white label PBX platforms that offer greater control, flexibility, and long-term margin certainty, without unnecessary complexity.
3CX has built a strong brand in the hosted PBX market, and for many years it served the SMB channel well. But a series of decisions since early 2025 have changed the economics for smaller partners significantly.
In February 2025, 3CX increased the license prices for its 4SC PRO and ENT licenses by 43% in USD terms, a cost that partners are now required to pass on to their clients. This follows a broader pattern of price increases and the phase-out of free licenses over the past two years. For MSPs serving small businesses, where margin is already thin, this significantly changes the value proposition.
In the same announcement, 3CX confirmed that 4SC license sales will no longer count toward partner status. For Bronze and Silver partners who built their businesses on SMB deployments, this is a direct hit to their standing in the 3CX network. Partners who relied on 4SC sales to maintain their tier now face an unenviable choice: move upmarket or lose status. In Australia, where 97% of businesses employ fewer than 20 staff, moving upmarket is far easier said than done.
3CX has ended free support for Bronze partners, with support tickets now a paid add-on. For partners managing multiple small deployments, unplanned support costs add operational overhead that can quickly erode margin on smaller accounts.
In late 2025, 3CX introduced a fair-use policy capping the maximum number of extensions per SIM Call license size. While enforcement is not scheduled to begin before April 2026, the change requires partners to revisit every existing deployment and requote accordingly. For environments with high extension counts and low concurrency, such as healthcare, education, and hospitality, this creates significant uplift costs.
Managing multiple customer PBXs on dedicated 3CX instances adds operational overhead. While 3CX does offer a multi-tenant option, the platform has been pushing partners toward it primarily as a cost management measure, not because it was designed from the ground up for MSP-scale operations. Partners who need true multi-tenancy with full white label control, consolidated billing, and automated provisioning will find the experience falls short of what a purpose-built platform can offer.
AdvancedPBX, powered by Netsapiens and delivered through Telcoinabox, was purpose-built for MSPs and telcos who want full ownership of their voice business, without the complexity or commercial uncertainty of the current 3CX landscape. It is one of the core products in the Telcoinabox platform, designed specifically for providers who need to scale their PBX offering without scaling their overhead.
Manage hundreds of customer PBX instances from a single pane of glass. No separate instances, no duplicated effort. AdvancedPBX was built from the ground up for multi-tenant deployment, not retrofitted as an afterthought.
Present your own logo, domain, and colours to every customer. Your brand stays front and centre across every interaction.
Ship and activate devices anywhere in Australia with no manual setup required. Resolve customer issues remotely without onsite visits, reducing the operational cost of managing distributed SMB deployments.
AdvancedPBX includes built-in AI capabilities including call transcription, sentiment analysis, and voice-to-text — features that are increasingly expected by business customers and that generate genuine upsell opportunity for MSPs. Read more about how AI is changing what PBX buyers expect.
Combined with Octane, Telcoinabox's integrated billing and automation platform, partners can reduce manual effort, eliminate data duplication, and create a seamless experience from provisioning through to invoicing.
Telcoinabox exists to enable service providers, not compete with them. Unlike platforms that increasingly push partners toward enterprise segments that don't match their customer base, everything we build is designed to help our partners deliver more value under their own brand to the customers they already serve.
That means you own the customer relationship. You control pricing and packaging. You get enterprise-grade reliability and scalability. And 4SC SMB deployments are fully supported, not a commercial inconvenience.
For MSPs currently weighing their options, it is also worth reading our broader analysis of how the Australian PBX market is shifting, including what is happening with Avaya, Mitel, and the major telcos, not just 3CX.
If your business is feeling constrained by rising license costs, tightening partner requirements, or the operational overhead of managing multiple dedicated PBX instances, the case for exploring an alternative has never been stronger.
AdvancedPBX by Telcoinabox delivers the flexibility, automation, and partner control that MSPs need to thrive in a changing communications landscape, without asking you to abandon the SMB customers that built your business.
